Eyes Strong, Message Clear is a photographic print of manipulated collages drawn from childhood experiences of dining etiquette within Macedonian households, where the table was a place of tradition, hierarchy, and unspoken rules.
The composition brings together two dining scenes, both occupied by men. At the head of the table sits an elderly, well-dressed man wearing glasses, anchoring the space with a quiet authority. His presence feels watchful, as though he holds influence over the atmosphere without speaking.
The title reflects a familiar childhood lesson: expectations were often communicated before entering someone else’s home. A single look could carry enough meaning to correct behaviour, delivering a message that was immediate and understood.
In this work, discipline is shown as something learned through observation. Respect was not only about manners, but about how a child’s behaviour represented the family. Eyes Strong, Message Clear reflects how these dynamics were absorbed early, and how the dining table became the first place they were felt.
